TT – The Tourists Have Landed

13 things I love about this time of year (Visit here for the flip side)

Bay Bridge becoming engulfed in the fog

1. Tourist season

2. Watching people wander through Chinatown. I walk through Chinatown and almost everyday at lunch and I love observing people experiencing a completely new culture.

3. Watching people stare out at the pacific ocean, especially if they’ve never seen an ocean before.

4. Watching people from the east coast who’ve only ever seen the Atlantic Ocean remark at how different the pacific is from the Atlantic – it really is a completely different colour.

5. Watching people ride on the street car for the first time. It’s really like taking a time travel trip to the 1920’s.

6. Taking someone on the golden gate bridge for the first time. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve lived here – the golden gate is still the coolest!

7. Watching someone ogle the variety of produce at the Ferry Plaza.

8. Watching people visit the Saturday morning farmers market at the Ferry Building. Most just grab a cup of coffee sit on the benches, eat a fabulous serving of ricotta stuffed French toast covered in peaches.

9. Having lunch at a communal table with people from all over the world.

10. Listening to all the different languages being spoken.

11. Carousel at the Children’s Playground in Golden Gate Park.

12. Meeting with people after they’ve taken their kids to Zeum

13. People singing ‘I left my heart in San Francisco,” giggling like school kids while riding the Cable Car.

  1. Hey–I’m only counting 9!

My human wishes when she was there that she got to see the Farmer’s Market but there was a seminar and of course they were in class on the weekend morning… sigh. She always loves to see your photos

  3. Mom would like to visit San Francisco! Her brother in law lives there! Sounds like a wonderful place! Your pictures always bring it to life and there seems to be so much color there.

  4. Cool photo of our neighborhood. I see the piers, and the intersection of Townsend Street and the Embarcadero where I often walk. Is the photo from the ballpark? That is one spot I do try to avoid, especially the crowds before and after the games.

  5. I love San Francisco! I’ve only visited it once – a couple of years ago, but we stayed for 10 days and it was fantastic. You may have seen us wandering through China town enjoying the culture … or taking photos of the wonderful golden gate bridge, or hanging on to the outside of the street cars.

It must be a fabulous place to live. I hope to return again soon.

  9. That’s so true about the different colors of the Atlantic and Pacific. We’re east-coasters but I’ve visited San Fran before and loved it. You’re lucky to live there!

    24-July-2008 at 8:09 am

  10. The flip and flop of tourist season. We are thinking we will come and be tourists at the Asian Art Museum MIng exhibit. We will not refer the San Francisco as “Frisco”.

    24-July-2008 at 8:39 am

  11. My mom has only seen San Francisco from afar, and even from a distance, it’s a very beautiful city! She’s wanted to visit the Farmer’s Market ever since she started visiting your blog and seeing what you’ve brought home!

    24-July-2008 at 8:39 am

  12. It sounds fun! We haven’t been to San Francisco, but Mommy’s seen the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. She says it’s weird how they’re different colors.

    24-July-2008 at 8:52 am

  13. The tourists always used to make Mommy laugh when we lived there – everyone running around in shorts! That’s how you could tell the tourists from the locals :-)

  18. “Frisco!”
Mom an Dad luv bisiting San Francisco an it’s bout time they taked the boy there. But they just flew back from El Lay (an boy are their arms tired) an dey say it’s too spensive to travel again soon.

  19. The article about the communal table is neat. That hasn’t appeared here in the midwest, though Minneapolis likes to think itself “trendy” . Don’t know how it would catch on here. People hardly even carpool to work, its one body to a car. These stoic midwesterners would be slow to adopt the concept I think, as fun as it sounds!

  20. HA! Your “flip side” list was great too!

    24-July-2008 at 1:34 pm

  21. Beautiful picture! Our mom & dad went to SF last year and LOVED it. They really want to move to Half Moon Bay and enjoy SF restaurants, shopping, etc … but gettin’ 3 kitties across the country, not gonna happen, so they can just dream.

    24-July-2008 at 1:39 pm

  22. Great list! We will remember them when we next come to SF. (We’ll also try hard not to do the things on the flip side list!)

    24-July-2008 at 6:23 pm

  23. Mom and Auntie would probably do #13. Badly and loudly.

    24-July-2008 at 7:07 pm

  24. Mum would like to order the #8! French toast and peaches!

    24-July-2008 at 7:35 pm

  25. Mom sez dat communal table sounds like going to a local park here on a really nice day. More families den tables so ya just share. Mom likes it when dey all share food too…Mom sez she’s been to both oceans and all da Great Lakes. She also is amused when a visitor comes here and dey take dem to da lakefront and dey say something like “oh, there’s waves”. Well yeah, it’s a purrty big lake! Der not ocean size but bigger den most lake waves…

  26. I liked your TT. Mom can relate to #4. She visited LA last summer and saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time. It really did look different. She must visit San Diego in three weeks, but doesn’t think she will get up the coast too far.

Sorry we haven’t visited the past couple of days. Mom’s laptop crashed and she is still feeling a little yechy!

    24-July-2008 at 8:44 pm

  27. Oh, you make it sound so nice. We want to come ride the cable cars too. And eat the french toast without the peaches.

    24-July-2008 at 8:52 pm

  28. Wow that’s a really cool place! Are there bananas there?

Come look at our blog and check out the award we gave you!

Sunday mornings at Sam’s in Tiburon (well, ok, the dock area and only after the bloody mary’s….then things got communal)
