Since we have so many new friends – I thought it was time to go over some Bun terms with our new friends.

Bunny Vocabulary

  • Another name for a rabbit is Lagomorph, a plant eating mammal having fully furred feet and 2 pair of upper incisors (front teeth). Hares and pikas are also lagomorphs.
  • Newborn rabbits are called kittens. Grown male rabbits are bucks and grown females are does.
  • Newborn hares are called leverets. Grown hares are also called bucks and does.
  • Rabbits and other animals that sleep during the day and night and play at dawn and dusk are known as crepuscular. Those who sleep all day and are awake all night are called nocturnal.
  • Rabbits live in underground tunnels called warrens.
  • Kindle is what a rabbit does when it gives birth.
  • Rabbits and hares are herbivores (plant eaters). They eat grass, leaves, bark and twigs in the wild.
  • Bunnies are usually very quiet but can communicate in the following ways:
  1. Chinning – Rubbing with their chin marks their territory and says ‘All mine!’
  2. The Flop – Stretched out and relaxed means ‘Leave me alone, I’m relaxing here!’
  3. Ears laid-back and hunkered down mean they are anxious or annoyed so ’Leave me be’
  4. Pushing something away means ‘Not interested’ or ‘I’m all done’.
  5. Nose Bumps – Little kisses and nose rubs means ‘I like you a lot!’ and ‘You’re my best friend’.
  6. BINKIE – Big leaps and twists are made by really happy and silly bunnies.
